Inside the Artist’s Studio with Tony Tasset: All Things Must Pass
According to the artist:
“My work is intended to speak to the widest possible audience. I tap into universal themes and emotions through common pictorial languages. To this end I employ familiarity, humor, craft, sentiment, confession and shock. I make iconic images about the current cultural moment from an individual perspective. I commonly deal with themes such as birth, death, family, nature, beauty, love, fear, loss, desire, the body, culture, politics, morality, irony, sincerity, and America. My practice makes use of many different mediums and styles. No medium is superior to another, but the choice of medium and style is meaningful. The idea driving each project dictates the material choice and presentation. I sample or am inspired by a broad array of sources, including: Michelangelo, Norman Rockwell, Bob Dylan, Process Art, Feminism, Cappucine Monks, Television Commercials, Nature, Catholicism, vernacular traditions and childhood memories. Some work employs my family or myself as subject. I blur distinctions between reality and fiction. I search for a meeting place between the intimacies of my life, my individuality and the zeitgeist of a populace. I critique my culture and myself. Artistic and moral positions are contextual. In my work, I attempt to reveal truth.”
Tony Tasset has been an important and influential conceptual artist since the mid 1980’s. We invite you and your students to join us for an hour of exciting discussion and exploration of the ideas expressed in Mr. Tasset’s artist statement for All Things Must Pass. Tied to Missouri Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) and National Standards in Visual Arts, this interactive program challenges students and teachers to explore their concepts of art as they engage with examples of Mr. Tasset’s provocative and evocative works.
Exhibition Description:
From October 6, 2007 through January 13, 2008, Laumeier Sculpture Park will present an important solo museum exhibition by internationally-recognized artist Tony Tasset. All Things Must Pass will fill Laumeier’s indoor galleries and extend to our outdoor galleries with a new, commissioned, monumental outdoor sculpture. The exhibition, the first to showcase Tasset’s work in St. Louis, will include selected works from the past decade, recent work, and new work. A broad range of media typical of Tasset’s practice—video, photography, and a variety of approaches to sculpture will be featured.
Tasset frequently uses his environment, his family and himself as subject and inspiration. His work, employing wisdom and wit, continuously contends with the trappings of modernism, postmodern theory, pop culture, and the human emotions associated with love, loss, frailty and beauty. In recent work he has turned to the dual nature of his own existence—an urban artist/public figure as well as a suburban-father-with-garden. Using this deeply personal source material, he creates objects and images that are at once ironic, earnest, and decidedly humanistic. Tasset describes his work as an exploration of the “conflicts of the ego and the difficulty in expressing certain sentiments in a postmodern environment where truth is relative, and in a culture of consumption where emotion is a commodity.”
Artist Information:
Tony Tasset received his BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and his MFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (1985). He is currently a professor of art and design at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Tasset has exhibited his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; and Camerawork, London among others. He has lived and worked in Chicago for over fifteen years.

DESCRIPTION: “Remembering September 11”
In the early hours of September 11, 2001, students and teachers had just settled into a new school year when the day's tragic events began to unfold.
Now six years have passed since Americans heard those first unbelievable reports that a plane, and then another plane, had crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Soon this was followed by a crash from a hijacked Boeing 757 slamming into the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 crashing in a field in southwest Pennsylvania.
For a generation of students who were not around when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated or when Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, the events of that day in New York City, Washington, D.C., and a field in Pennsylvania are pivotal in their lives. The impact of September 11, 2001 will not be forgotten.
Join Dr. James Booth as he explores questions such as:
- Has the world become a safer or a more dangerous place since September 11, 2001?
- Have America's history of civil liberties eroded after September 11?
- Did the horrors and the human toll of that indelible, infamous day fundamentally change American life?
- HOW has society changed?
- What kind of psychological changes have the September 11 attacks brought?
- How did September 11 change our attitudes and behaviors?
- Have Americans adapted to living with terrorism while we continue the struggle to defeat it?

Free World-Wide Conference - MegaConference IX
NOW OPEN:
Call for Presentations (now called "Interactions")
Call for Participation
Call for MCUs.
The Megaconference is the world's largest video conference (400 locations around the world) and everyone in the world with H.323 or compatible equipment is invited to participate. See last years program for a complete listing of all the varied kinds of events that take place. A special new feature this year is the Flag of Earth, which symbolizes world togetherness and fits in well with the goals of the Megaconference.
The Megaconference is sponsored by the Internet2 Commons, and supported by many organizations and manufacturers and vendors. There is no cost for participation, and you need not be connected to Internet2.
Please forward this announcement to people and lists who you feel may be interested. Thanks!
DETAILS
You can get an idea of the type of interaction desired by looking at last year's program, at http://www.megaconference.org . Each interaction is 15 minutes long. Interactions which demonstrate new or novel applications of videoconferencing technology, increase world understanding, and are interactive are preferred. Musical presentations are also invited. The deadline for proposals is Sept 21, but please send your proposal in as soon as possible. A paragraph describing it is sufficient.
Videoconferencing is inherently an interactive medium, and to encourage that, we are using the term "interactions" rather than "presentations" to describe these parts of the Megaconference.
Each proposal is required to be interactive, involving at least a total of two locations.
Truly performance-based presentations such as music, dance etc need not involve more than one site, but it is still encouraged.
~~~~
General registration for the event is also open as of later today. Registration closes Oct 18.
See http://www.megaconference.org both to register as a participant, and to propose an interaction.
~~~~
The Megaconference requires a large network of MCUs around the world, and we are also asking MCU managers to volunteer their capabilities to help in this huge event. Please contact Gabe Moulton in that regard (moulton.13@osu.edu).
See you then!
