Grade 9-12: Mary Robinson, Making Human Rights the Compass for all Ethical Globalization

“Making Human Rights the Compass for all Ethical Globalization”
Date: Monday, March 3, 2008
Time:1:00-2:00 p.m.

Mary Robinson, the first woman President of Ireland (1990-1997) and more former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002), has spent most of her life as a human rights advocate. Born Mary Bourke in Ballina, County Mayo (1944), the daughter of two physicians, she was educated at the University of Dublin (Trinity College), King's Inns Dublin and Harvard Law School to which she won a fellowship in 1967.
As an academic (Trinity College Law Faculty 1968-90), legislator (Senator 1969-89) and barrister (1967-90, Senior Counsel 1980, English Bar 1973) she has always sought to use law as an instrument for social change, arguing landmark cases before the European Court of Human Rights as well as in the Irish courts and the European Court in Luxemburg. A committed European, she also served on the International Commission of Jurists, the Advisory Committee of Interights, and on expert European Community and Irish parliamentary committees.
She married in 1970 Nicholas Robinson, lawyer, conservationist, and an authority on eighteenth-century caricature. They have a daughter and two sons. In 1988 Mary Robinson and her husband founded the Irish Centre for European Law at the Trinity College. Ten years later she was elected Chancellor of the University.
The recipient of numerous honors and awards throughout the world, Mary Robinson is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and the American Philosophical Society and, since 2002, has been Honorary President of Oxfam International. A founding member and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders, she serves on many boards including the Vaccine Fund, and chairs the Irish Chamber Orchestra.
Currently based in New York, Mary Robinson is now leading Realizing Rights: the Ethical Globalization Initiative. Its mission is to put human rights standards at the heart of global governance and policy-making and to ensure that the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable are addressed on the global stage.

CREATIVE MINDS: Lara ZeisesConfessions of a Two-Headed Author
Date: March 13, 2008
Time: 10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. ET
Target Grade Levels: 7-12

Description:
Award-winning young adult novelist Lara M. Zeises has a secret: she's also Lola Douglas, author of True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet and its sequel, More Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet. Want to know how (or why!) Lara, a self-proclaimed dork and pop culture junkie, cooked up her mysterious alter-ego? In this presentation, Lara will explain it all to you: how she became a writer; why she sets the books published under her name in Delaware; how Lola came into existence; what's it's like to have one of your books turned into a Lifetime TV movie (True Confessions, which will air in 2008!); and why it's sometimes difficult when your alter-ego leads a more glamorous life than you do!
In addition, Lara will talk about her adventures in blogging, and how being a blogger has helped improve and inform her writing. Schools will receive a complimentary copy of Contents Under Pressure, courtesy of Random House Children's Books. Students participating in this event should be familiar with one or more novels by Lara M. Zeises and/or Lola Douglas - preferably Contents Under Pressure (Zeises) and True Confessions of Hollywood Starlet (Douglas). Students will have ample opportunity to ask questions during this fun, engaging and interactive learning experience!

Grade 4-8: IditaProject with Bering Strait School District

Bering Strait School District will once again be offering schools the opportunity to follow
the Iditarod race through student and teacher created coverage from along the trail. New
student and teacher forums provide a great deal more interaction than in prior years.

Over 8000 students from from 170 schools in 37 states participated in last year's IditaProject.
Special guests included author Gary Paulsen, Iditarod National Historical Trail rangers, and
the official Iditarod Teacher on the Trail. Roughly 47% of the participants last year were
from grades 4-8.

There is no charge for teachers or students. Video conference connection bandwidth and
assistance for all schools involved is being generously donated by GCI's SchoolAccess division.

The annual BSSD IditaProject connects schools and students in the lower 48 with web and video
coverage of the Iditarod. Participants this year will help collaboratively construct thematic
instructional resources online using wiki-based software, and BSSD's hundreds of Open
Content images, video and audio clips from prior races.

There are six (6) thematic video conferences planned, and each is broadcast live twice each
day. Schools sign up for either the morning or afternoon session if they would like to actively
participate, or they can watch online video streams at any time.
