Grades 9-12: Pew Fellowships in the Arts Discussion Series

MAGPI is very pleased to announce the new Pew Fellowships in the Arts Discussion Series, a joint project with the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Heritage. These interactive videoconference sessions are free of charge and open to high school and college students.

During these exciting programs, hear about the experiences of the 2007 Pew Fellows in the Arts and interact with them via two-way videoconferencing. Short films of each artist will be shown to demonstrate the inspirations, influences and ideas that go into creating their works. Panel discussions include interactive talks about art-making processes, exploration of dance styles and music composition. Short descriptions can be found below.

For more information or to register for one of these programs, please visit: http://www.magpi.net/programs/pewarts.html. Space in each session is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

THE 2007 PEW FELLOWS IN CRAFTS DEMONSTRATE THEIR ART-MAKING PROCESSTuesday, November 18, 2008 * 1:00pm – 2:15pm ET
Craft artists use a variety of material, ranging from fabric to porcelain and leather to paper to create works that are not only beautiful in appearance, but also embody a deeper meaning that goes beyond the surface. The 2007 Pew Fellows in craft – Ed Bing Lee, Fritz Dietel, Adelaide Paul, and Julie York – will demonstrate in four short films the inspirations, influences and ideas that go into creating their works of art. An interactive discussion with a panel of the artists will follow the screenings. The films were directed by 1997 Pew Fellow Glenn Holsten, who will also be on the panel to answer questions about producing them.

Choreography influenced by hip hop, samba, traditional African dance, ballet, contemporary and site-specific dance is the focus of this program featuring the 2007 Pew Fellows in choreography. Following the screening of four short films about Philadelphia-area choreographers Charles O. Anderson, Nicole Cousineau, Kate Watson-Wallace, and Dorothy Gordon Wilkie, the artists will talk about their work and answer questions from the audience. The films were directed by 1997 Pew Fellow Glenn Holsten, who will also be on the panel to answer questions about producing them.

AN INSIDE, PERSONAL LOOK AT COMPOSING MUSIC WITH THE 2007 PEW FELLOWS IN COMPOSITION Thursday, December 4, 2008 * 1:00pm – 2:15pm ET
What inspires a contemporary composer to write jazz or classical music, hip hop or vocal music reflecting personal experiences? The 2007 Pew Fellows in composition – King Britt, Gerald Levinson, Peter Paulsen, and Jamey Robinson – will give you a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into writing music in these varied musical styles. Four short films on each of these composers will be followed by a panel featuring two of the artists who will discuss their work further and field questions from the audience. The films were directed by 1997 Pew Fellow Glenn Holsten, who will also be on the panel to answer questions about producing them.

Grades K-12: Chapters **FREE**

Chapters is a collaborative writing project for K-12 students. Project
teachers will propose a title for a chapter book. One class will start the book
by writing and posting the first chapter on the Chapters website. The next
class will write Chapter 2 and a third class will write Chapter 3. All classes
will write their own final chapter based on the previously written chapters.
Each class will present or act out their version of the final chapter in a multipoint
video distance learning connection.
The North Central Ohio Educational Service Center will coordinate the
Chapters project by maintaining the Chapters website, identifying
participating classes, facilitating the culminating videoconference, and
managing the video connection among the participating classes. Check out
our website, including previous projects, at http://www.ncoesc.org/

Grades K-1: Safety Based Lessons

It is that time of year again! They would like to connect with a few elementary classes to do some simple “safety based” lessons via IVDL. I will list the topics and grade levels below that they need. Just a reminder, these are “college students”, not professional presenters”. Although I review the material, I don’t really have a roll in the actual presentation. It is a wonderful learning experience for them, and I hope that we can find some classes for them to connect to. These are FREE (1/2 hour) sessions.

Please let me know if you have a volunteer class for the following:
1. Dental Awareness (for a KDG or 1st grade) (1:15-1:45pm) October 23rd
2. Fire Safety (for a KDG or 1st grade) (2:00-2:30pm) October 23rd
3. Poison Prevention (for a KDG or 1st grade) (2:40-3:10pm) October 23rd
