Masks and Movement: Focus on African Masks Grades K-8February 24, 2009 * Multiple Times http://www.magpi.net/programs/masksandmovement.html
Students will create and work with masks as part of this exciting workshop, brought to you by ArcheDream! Participants will be shown a series of painted masks in various emotions and asked to pick the mask that attracts their attention. Each is given the opportunity to manifest the emotion that the mask embodies, which becomes a revelation of invisible feelings. The communication as each participant reveals their issue of feeling bonds the group into a new relationship. The exercise teaches how to objectify a subjective emotion and attain an art form and communication with peers. Participants’ differences are brought into harmonious relativity.

Youth and Violence: An Global Exploration Grades 9-12February 26 – May 15, 2009 * 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. ET http://www.magpi.net/programs/youthviolence.html Open to Non-MAGPI Members
Youth violence is a social problem that affects many different countries and cultures around the world. Although the root causes of youth violence (such as poverty, war, drug use and prejudicial beliefs) vary from country to country, the resulting symptoms of youth violence are universal. Feelings of alienation, connectedness and hopelessness are experienced to some extent by all youth offenders regardless of race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or gender. Bringing students together from different countries, this workshop will take a cross-cultural look at how youth violence varies in different regions of the world and how young people can break the patterns of violent behavior and prevent it from following them into adulthood. Over a period of four months, students will work together to explore this issue and then create digital media projects that tell their own community’s story. A digital media project festival will conclude this project.

This is the second program in our ten part series with the Missouri Department of Transportation as they build a new bridge over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri. Viewers may participate in one program or any combination of programs. All programs will be archived for on-demand viewing as well on our website.

Education: Grade(s): 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

When you travel you notice there are all sorts of different shapes to bridges that span rivers, gorges, and highways. Have you ever wondered “Why did they build that kind of bridge here?” This program is designed to help you and your students answer that question. We’ll explore basic bridge shapes such as arch, beam, suspension, and cable-stayed. We’ll look at the forces of tension, compression, torsion, bending and shear that act on those bridge shapes. We’ll investigate how the purpose of the bridge, its geographic location, and materials used in its construction also help determine its final design. This is the second of our ten part series developed with the Missouri Department of Transportation as it builds a new bridge across the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri. Students will see examples of different types of bridges and engage in interactive discussion and activities with engineers who design and build bridges. We’ll look at examples of bridges from around the world and the specifics of the new bridge being built at Glasgow.

We also ask that the person making the reservation please coordinate with teachers, technical coordinators, bridges and other interested parties prior to submitting the request. COSI will retain a $25 processing fee for ALL reservations and test connections: the processing fee and test connection are included in the price of the program. If you need to cancel a reservation, you must reschedule your program two weeks prior to the show. COSI will reschedule your program or test connection one time before an additional $25 rescheduling fee is added to the price. COSI understands the occasional need to reschedule programs due to changing schedules, inclement weather or technical difficulties. However, COSI begins to commit time and resources to a program the moment a reservation is received. COSI strongly recommends performing a test connection at least 2 days prior to the event. The school has the right to cancel any program the day of the test if a successful connection cannot be made and COSI will refund all but the $25 processing fee. If a school declines the test connection, or reschedules the program or test connection within the two-week period, COSI reserves the right to charge the full dollar amount for the program.
