Program SeriesThis is the fourth program in our ten part series with the Missouri Department of Transportation as they build a new bridge over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri. Viewers may participate in one program or any combination of programs. More information about the entire series and archived versions of previous programs can be found at http://mobridge.more.net.
Education: Grade(s): 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
It’s a pretty typical day in the office when the boss drops in and says, “Hey, the Missouri Department of Transportation has just informed us they’ve got a bridge over the Missouri River that needs replacing. We’d like to get that job. I’ve got the specs here on the location. Put your team together and come up with some preliminary design options we can send them for consideration.” What do you do next? Where do you begin? How do engineers create preliminary design plans for a new bridge? What factors impact their choices most? What do they need to know about the location’s terrain, the previous bridge’s design and structure, cost parameters, etc.? Go to the source. Interact with engineers to find out how they weigh conflicting conditions, scientific principles, and federal regulations to begin the process of designing a bridge. What is it like to apply the principles of engineering to the real world of designing a specific bridge? Join us for this program, the fourth of our ten part series developed with the Missouri Department of Transportation as it builds a new bridge across the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri, to view the “big picture” of bridge design and find out.

Creative Writing Series with Pat McKissack

New Links News St. Louis author Pat McKissack does a three part Creative Writing series: the first v/c is with the participating teachers, to discuss goals and themes. The second & third v/c are with the students, where they talk with Pat about all there is to being an author. They learn the methods she uses when writing fiction. In the third v/c, students share their work with Pat and she provides a critique of the writing. The goal of the project is to introduce students to the process that authors use to write a book and to engage them in writing activities themselves that mirror this process.
The program fee has been reduced 20% - cost now is $600 for three interactive sessions.
Pat videoconferences live from Cooperating School Districts in St. Louis, Missouri, so all times listed are central- standard or daylight, depending on the time of year:

February 24, 4 pm
March 3, 9:30 or 11 am
March 17, 9:30 or 11 am
(please sign up by 2/18/09)

As you know, teachers select one time slot and use it for both sessions. Fall dates are grouped together, spring dates are grouped together. No mixing ‘n matching, please! Also, we limit each videoconference time slot to three schools, with no more than 30 kids at each site. If there are a variety of grade levels interested, we group accordingly. A former teacher, Pat works with elementary through high school students. This is an interactive writing series. To read more on past videoconferences, visit The Writer’s Workshop blog, Can You Imagine?, at http://www.authorvisit.wordpress.com/.

This school year marks Pat’s 10th anniversary of videoconferencing with New Links to New Learning and Cooperating School Districts! We hope you can join us as we start this new chapter! To sign up for the videoconference series, and to find out about pricing and connections, contact Rebecca Morrison at rmorrison@csd.org.

Grades K-12: Alex's Virtual Lemonade Stand Project **FREE**

Alex's Virtual Lemonade Stand Project
Grades K-12March 23 through April 3, 2009
More Information/Registration: http://www.magpi.net/programs/alexslemonade.html Open to Non-MAGPI Members

Kids helping Kids Make a Difference! Join other schools across the country as they host lemonade stands to raise money for pediatric cancer research and participate in other related projects. Schools will collaborate with each other through a blog, a special "kick off" videoconference spirit rally and closing project collage videoconference event. During this two week project, each school will hold their own lemonade stands to help raise funds for pediatric cancer. Schools can hold one big lemonade stand day or a series of lemonade stand events throughout the two weeks. After each day of sales, schools will report their totals through the website. Last year we raised more than $23,000. Think we can double it?
