Program Description Meet Jacqueline Kelly, Newberry award-winning author of The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Ms Kelly, practiced both law and medicine before finding her real passion—writing ! In addition to reading excerpts from her book, Ms. Kelly will discuss the source of her creative ideas and describe how she weaves them into imaginative stories. Originating from the galleries of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, this program will connect art, language arts, and science. With reference to the book’s heroine Callie Vee and her grandfather who explored the wilds of central Texas, discovering and documenting a new plant species, participants in this program will also see spectacular images of plant life in the form of botanical prints published in books dating back to the 17th century. These rare books (some quite large!) are currently on view in a special exhibition entitled Nature Bound: Illustrated Botanical Books, co-curated by librarians from The Botanical Research Institute of Texas and the Carter Museum.
Program Format The author will read and speak to students about the creative process for approximately 30 minutes. Using an inquirey-based format, botanical prints will be shown and discussed for about 10 minutes. Interactive sites will be invited to ask questions of the author.
Objectives - explore historical fiction and experience the writing process through the words of a successful children's novelist.
- find connections between art and literature.
- develop an appreciation for a museum gallery experience.
