Program Description Go inside the artist’s studio at Craft Alliance in St. Louis as your students interact with metals artist Robert Longyar or woodworking artist Matt Keim. Students will be able to interact with the artist as each creates a new piece. They’ll be able to ask their questions about how the design is created, what tools are used and why, and see the final piece created. We’ll explore the big questions: Where do ideas for art come from? How is inspiration transformed into a piece of art? How are metals and woods used to create works of art? What techniques are available for the metals and woodworking artist? If a student or two from your school has a metal or woodworked piece they’d like to share with the artist and discuss the processes they used to create it, please let us know. The artists would welcome the opportunity to respond to student work. Cost for the program is FREE.

PLEASE NOTE: The morning program will have students interacting with woodworking artist Matt Keim. The afternoon program will have students interacting with metals artist Robert Longyear. A short biography and/or artist statement from each is included below:

Morning Program Artist Matt Keim:

“I have been around woodworking for all my life, as my father taught woodworking for more than thirty years.
I have always worked with wood in various forms to create both functional and non-functional pieces.
I sought out woodturning as a way to express myself and relieve stress.
I find it magical to stand in front of a wood lathe and watch long thin ribbons of wood fly over my shoulder, exposing a form within.
I try to expose the beauty of the piece I am working by defining the shape to show the grain pattern in all its glory.
I turn a variety of woods, both domestic and exotic, often searching for salvaged wood.
I love simple forms that do not take away from the natural beauty of the wood itself.
I believe that woodturning gives a piece of wood a second life that can be enjoyed for generations.”

More information about the artist and examples of his works can be found at his website, http://www.keimartworks.com/.

Afternoon Program Artist Robert Longyear:

Robert Longyear is an artist whose practice alters the integrity of built structures as a way to compromise and transform.

“I’m drawn to buildings as metaphor for system breakdowns – and as opportunities to learn more about how humans interface with the world through architecture. I use neglected structures as my raw material. In this way, I am able to reveal their hidden construction, provide new ways of perceiving space, and create metaphors for the human condition."

Longyear received his MFA from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and his BFA from the University of Kansas. He is the Community Outreach Manager and Metals Studio Chair at Craft Alliance in St. Louis, MO.

More information about the artist and examples of his works can be found at his website, http://flypigeoncamp.blogspot.com/.

Additional images with examples of the artists’ works will be sent as part of the program’s preparatory materials.
