Grades 6-12: Live Medical Procedures through COSI

*Surgical Suite: Total Knee Replacement - Grades 6 to 12*

COSI currently has openings for our upcoming Surgical Suite: Total Knee Replacement sessions on May 13, 2009 at 8:45am ET, and 1:15pm ET and May 27, 2009 at 11:00am ET. This program connects students in grades 6 to 12 to a LIVE total knee replacement surgery. Your students will get to interact with the surgeon and other operating room staff during this session.

Teachers will be sent a kit of materials prior to the conference. In the kit, teachers will find materials to conduct both pre and post-visit activities, along with booklets for the students to use during the program.

*In Depth: Autopsy - Grades 10 to 12*

COSI currently has openings for our In Depth: Autopsy program on May 21, 2009 at 9:00am ET and 11:00am ET. In Depth: Autopsy allows your students in grades 10 to 12 to experience a real autopsy from start to finish. Guided by a forensic pathologist, you will follow a videotape of an actual autopsy while trying to solve for the patient's cause of death.

Teachers receive a kit of materials and for pre- and post-experience activities in the classroom. The kit includes enough materials for up to 30 students.

Grades 7-12: Staging Shakespeare Outdoors **FREE**

As part of its ongoing collaboration with HEC-TV Live!, RoundTrips is very pleased to announce two FREE videoconference programs set for May 14 with the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis. Each year the Shakespeare Festival provides a wonderful, free, public theater experience under the stars in the beautiful urban oasis of Forest Park in St. Louis. This year, they are producing "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and our two programs will take you live to their outdoor performance space to see how the production comes together. As you'll note in the short descriptions below, our morning program will focus on production elements and our afternoon program on acting. More details, including program format, learning activities, and curriculum standards are available at our CILC web exhibit for each show. Those links are provided with the short descriptions below.

Program 1: Staging Shakespeare Outdoors: The Production Elements
Date: May 14, 2009
Time: 10:00 a.m. Central Time
Grade Level: Grades 7-12
Live from the outdoor performance space of the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, program participants will interact with the director, designers and technical production staff for the Festival’s upcoming outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor. Audience members will tour the set and go both backstage and onstage as they find out what it’s like to design and stage a production outdoors. How do you handle lighting for the show? What about costumes and props? What happens if it rains? Where does the audience sit? Find out how all the front of house, onstage, and backstage production elements come together to create an exciting and enriching exper ence for the audience attending.

Program 2: Staging Shakespeare Outdoors: The Actors’ Perspective
Date: May 14, 2009
Time: 1:00 p.m. Central Time
Grade Level: Grades 7-12

Live from the outdoor performance space of the Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, program participants will interact with actors involved in the Festival’s upcoming outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor. Audience members will tour the set and go both backstage and onstage as they find out what it’s like to perform a play under the stars. How does it change the characterization created by the actor? What about projection and gestures? Does it change how actors use costumes and props? What happens f it rains? What’s it like to interact with an audience in an outdoor setting? Find the answers to these questions and more as you meet the actors working together to create an exciting and enriching experience for the audience attending.

During this FREE "view only" program you will meet this year’s winners of the second annual Great Tree Story Essay Contest for third grade students of the Fort Worth ISD. This year’s grand and first prize winning authors will read their winning essays during a videoconference delivered from the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge.
Guest of honor , Deborah Ferguson a journalist with the Dallas/Fort Worth NBC affiliate, Channel 5 News, will participate in the broadcast by reading Alan Zweibel’s heart-rending book, Our Tree Named Steve .

Grades 5-12: Are There Other Earth-Like Planets?

Are There Other Earth-Like Planets? You are invited to hear a NASA scientist talk about the search for other planets outside of our solar system. Each Wednesday in May as part of the NASA Careers Videoconference Series, a researcher will talk about several current and future missions to discover other planets.See the DLiNFocus web page for details about each week: http://erc.arc.nasa.gov/dln

May 6 – Dr. Jon Jenkins will talk about the current Kepler mission and some of the first images received this month

May 13 – Dr. Kerri Cahoy will talk about her work planning a future mission, PECO, to photograph earth-like planets

May 20 – Tracy Drain will talk about the engineering challenges of missions to Mars and the Kepler Mission

June 3 - A researcher to be announced will talk about robotics from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Celebrate Armed Forces Day with SOITA on Friday, May 15th as we honor the accomplishments of our greatest Commander in Chief, Abraham Lincoln. Honest Abe is 200 years old this year and is regarded by most historians as our greatest president and leader of the U.S. Armed Forces. Former history teacher Dave Gibson joins with Lincoln impersonator James Crabtree to provide an excellent program that will focus on Lincoln's role in the Union victory that led to the survival of the United States of America in the face of civil war. This will be a great opportunity for 8th grade students to review important concepts of the Civil War they learned about this school year. In addition, 7th graders will find this program an effective way to become acquainted with the subject matter they will be studying next year. Time will be allocated for student questions of our presenters.Please note: there is a limit on the number of sites per session. Registrations are on a first-come basis.

The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is looking for a few middle and high school classes to participate in a very special science distance learning opportunity about the Barnett Shale, an important topic in the North Texas region.
This opportunity will consist of a free 30-minute distance learning program, free classroom materials and a short survey to be filled out by your students prior to the program that will be needed for this program as well as other programs around energy at the Museum. (We promise that the survey will take no more than 10 minutes).
We’ve all heard about the Barnett Shale-now learn more about what is really going on right underneath our feet. We invite you to join Andrée Griffin, Manager of Geology for XTO Energy, and other classrooms and learn more about the geology of our region and why Barnett Shale is so important. We’ll need your students’ feedback to make this program a success. Look for an email from our staff right after you register for the program with more details.
