ASK ("Authors Specialist and Knowledge")


2007-2008 ASK Programs - We have a fabulous program line-up for

ASK ("Authors Specialist and Knowledge") is an organized process that
provides students with the opportunity to interview an author or a
subject specialist in the topic they are reading about in a novel.
The program uses excellent literature, journal writing and
interviewing to promote reading for understanding.

For a full refund, cancellations must be submitted 5 weeks (25 business days) ahead of time.
Programs cancelled less than 5 weeks before the date of the program will still be billed for the full cost.

Free World-Wide Conference - MegaConference IX

Megaconference IX will be Nov 8, 2007, from 8am to 11pm EST (GMT-5). You are invited to participate, and if you wish, also submit a proposed interaction.

The Megaconference is the world's largest video conference (400 locations around the world) and everyone in the world with H.323 or compatible equipment is invited to participate. See last years program for a complete listing of all the varied kinds of events that take place. A special new feature this year is the Flag of Earth, which symbolizes world togetherness and fits in well with the goals of the Megaconference.
The Megaconference is sponsored by the Internet2 Commons, and supported by many organizations and manufacturers and vendors. There is no cost for participation, and you need not be connected to Internet2.

DETAILS
You can get an idea of the type of interaction desired by looking at last year's program, at http://www.megaconference.org . Each interaction is 15 minutes long. Interactions which demonstrate new or novel applications of videoconferencing technology, increase world understanding, and are interactive are preferred. Musical presentations are also invited. The deadline for proposals is Sept 21, but please send your proposal in as soon as possible. A paragraph describing it is sufficient.
Videoconferencing is inherently an interactive medium, and to encourage that, we are using the term "interactions" rather than "presentations" to describe these parts of the Megaconference.
Each proposal is required to be interactive, involving at least a total of two locations.
Truly performance-based presentations such as music, dance etc need not involve more than one site, but it is still encouraged.

Storytelling Festival Connections

On the Friday after Labor Day, several nationally known storytellers, including West Virginia's award winning Bil Lepp, will be joining regional and local storytellers in Chillicothe, Ohio for the 4th annual Southern Ohio Storytelling Festival. If you can't attend the festival with your school, you can attend via a videoconference connection. Bill Lepp is returning for his third appearance at the festival. Donald Davis from North Carolina comes with tales from growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. Barbara McBride-Smith, author of several books and tapes, is nationally known for her post-modern folk tales. Barbara Freeman Eady specializes in African-American folk tales and fables. Tim Tingle is a member of the Oklahoma Choctaw tribe that is a sought-after speaker and storyteller, and an award-winning author of Native American fiction and folklore. Don't miss this opportunity for your grades 4-12 students to learn, laugh and be educated through the power of cultural and personal stories.

Grade 4-6: Iron Thunder: An Author Visit with Avi

Newbery Award-winning author Avi and The Mariners' Museum invite you to join in a conversation about Avi's new book, Iron Thunder. Avi performed much of the historical research for Iron Thunder here at our very own Mariners' Museum Library. The story concerns the U.S.S. Monitor, the famous Civil War ironclad ship. The Mariners’ Museum is the repository for all of the artifacts from the shipwreck of the U.S.S. Monitor. Avi will discuss his writing, the book, his research, and the questions that your students have for him.Classes will receive advance proof copies of the book - you'll be among the first to read Iron Thunder!

Classes that participate are expected to read Iron Thunder before the program date. Classes will follow the ASK system, to streamline questions. The questions will then be asked in a round-robin format.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities Distance Recruitment Event

Recruiters from the Historically Black Colleges and Universities are divided into two groups and connect with two separate sets of sites to offer college-bound students information on their schools, their schools' scholarship opportunities and general college application information. The general format of the program involves each recruiter introducing himself or herself and his or her school and then fielding questions regarding his/her school. Questions are done in a round-robin fashion in a hello next caller format with each participating site being able to ask a question during their turn.
