Building on the experiences of writing his two novels, "Moth Smoke" and "The Reluctant Fundamentalist," and of having lived for extended periods in Pakistan, the United States, and Britain, Moshin Hamid will speak on topics of literature, politics, and spirituality. In particular, questions he will consider include the following:
What are my own personal, political, and aesthetic origins as a writer?
How do I view the current situation in Pakistan, with an eye both to historical origins and possible future trajectories?
As a Muslim, how do I compare the experiences of being an immigrant in the United States and Europe?
What are the possibilities for a secular spirituality and antidotes to the contemporary tyranny of nostalgia?
How do I understand the role of literature, and in particular the unique form and co-creative potential of the novel?
What hope do I hold out for the United States in the world under the new administration of Barack Obama?
