The ocean is absorbing approximately 1/3 of theCO2 emitted to the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels. AsCO2 dissolves in seawater, the pH of the water decreases, resulting in acidification. This acidic environment compromises the ability of mollusks, plankton, sea stars, corals and other animals to produce the shells they require to survive. This program provides students with the unique opportunity to learn about this cutting-edge science from real scientists. Students will be introduced to ocean acidification; learn what it is, what is causing it, and what its effects could be on our oceans. These concepts will be reinforced with participation in lab experiments featuring acids and bases, pH, calcification, and the carbon cycle. Video footage of an ocean scientist collecting data for his research as well as an interview with the scientist will also supplement the program.
