Program Description		This spring, six great stories were selected from among 191 entries by third graders in Fort Worth ISD for special recognition in the fourth annual Great Tree Story Essay Contest sponsored by the Botanical Research Institute of Texas and other members of the Great Tree Ring www.brit.org/education/great-trees/the-great-tree-ring/ . The focus of the contest was to identify and celebrate trees that are significant to an individual or community. Two of the winning stories will be read by their authors from the galleries of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Participants in this videoconference will also view and discuss some of the greatest works by Hudson River School artists which are currently on loan to the Amon Carter from the New-York Historical Society. Paintings viewed will depict unspoiled landscapes from the mid- 19th century and participants will see how artists such as Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt used art and writing to promote conservation. This program has connections to science, social studies, and language arts. Most sites will be view-only.
Objectives		-Participants will see original works of art in museum gallery spaces. -Participants will gain an understanding of the first truly American art movement. -Participants will experience quality creative writing by a peer. -Students will be inspired by art and by the success of a peer to develop their own writing skills.

Journalism for Social Development in Myanmar/Burma and Other Countries

Guest Speaker:

Peter Hiscocks, Journalist and Broadcasting Consultant

Peter Hiscocks has worked extensively around the world with broadcast journalists and private and state broadcasting organizations. A former journalist on a number of British national newspapers, he worked with the BBC for more than 21 years – from radio reporter to television executive – and has won a number of awards for his work in news and current affairs.

As senior broadcasting consultant for the Thomson Foundation – Britain’s oldest media training and development consultancy – he has worked in 32 countries from South America to China, from Eastern Europe to southern Africa. He produced a number of films with hill tribes in South East Asia and has specialized in the development of free speech in divided communities.

He supervised the first training initiative and needs assessment in Radio Television Serbia, Belgrade, following the NATO bombings, and was the first to train Iraqi television staff in democratic journalism after the invasion.

For the Democratic Voice of Burma, he trained undercover television journalists by smuggling them out of the country to Thailand. Their extraordinarily brave work during the 2007 uprising was recognized in the documentary film “Burma VJ”, nominated for an Oscar in 2010: http://burmavjmovie.com/.
