This program is the eighth of a ten part series of programs dealing with the Missouri Department of Transportation building a new bridge over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri. Schools may sign up for one program or any combination thereof. How are all the elements of a mammoth construction process like a bridge over the Missouri River brought together? It takes the hard work of a great collaboration of people from diverse careers. Explore the careers of those who work in the bridge construction industry as you interact with the people constructing a new bridge over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri. Find out what it’s like to design a bridge, work with computer software, weld steel girders together, pour concrete, build new bridge piers, operate a crane, or run the barge that keeps vehicle traffic flowing while the bridge is closed for construction. See construction as it happens. View pictures and video of construction done earlier this year. And ask your questions of the people who work daily designing and building bridges.

Join us live from the construction site of the new bridge going over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri for our eighth program in our continuing series of programs produced with the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Come Listen to NASA Scientists Talk about their Research and Careers!!!

NASA would like to announce the upcoming Wednesday speakers for the DLiNFocus Videoconference series. The series is aimed at upper middle school and high school students to expose them to the variety of careers and research being done at NASA.

Each Wednesday a researcher will talk about their work for about 20min and their career path for 10min. Following the presentation is a chance for 5 schools to ask questions to the speaker about their research and career. The series is every Wednesday at 10:00 PDT (1:00 EDT). All presentations are FREE!

April’s presenters:

April 8 – Robotics software engineering – Hear how a high school student worked through NASA to become a robotic software programmer.

April 15 – Aerospace Engineer - Learn about preparing for future missions to Mars and Jupiter.

April 22 – Astrobiology – Investigate the geology and chemistry of ecosystems looking for forms of life.

There is no doubt we now live in an “Internet Age.” At the click of a mouse, you can e-mail hundreds of people simultaneously, buy that long-desired vintage automobile, or create a personal profile to share with the world. With unlimited opportunities, cyberspace may well have become the new “final frontier.” How best can we explore this frontier? How can we minimize risk and maximize safety? How can we help students be secure in their Internet activities? These are important questions, and we invite you and your students to participate in this important discussion. Students will interact with a variety of experts in the field including Joe Laramie, Director of Missouri’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and they will also have the chance to share with each other as well.

Topics will include online predators, cyber-bullying, identity theft and other Internet-related issues “This is such an important issue – it is absolutely critical for kids, parents and community members to be on the same page with regard to online safety,” said Randy Raw, Manager of Network Security at MOREnet. “The Internet is a fantastic learning tool, but like any tool, people need to understand what the risks are and how to use it safely.”

The bridge has been designed, public hearings have been held, and funding has been arranged. Construction is well underway with superstructure built for the bridge’s approach ramps and additional superstructure being built over the river itself. Now it is time to begin creating the surface structure. Join us live from the construction site of the new bridge going over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri.

What are the steps in creating the surface structure? What materials are used? How is the structure welded together? How is the surface structure for the bridge connected to the bridge support system? What elements are pre-fabricated and what is created on site? How does the installation occur? What are the careers involved in building a bridge? For the answers to these and other questions, join us for our sixth program in our continuing series of programs produced with the Missouri Department of Transportation as they build a new bridge over the Missouri River at Glasgow, Missouri. This is a two-part series and you may request either one or two programs.

Health and well-being are fundamental to peace and prosperity, both on individual and collective levels. During adolescence, young people begin to encounter a wide range of risks to health and well-being that they will face into adulthood. However, they often do not have the tools and support to do so successfully. Complex health issues such as substance abuse and nutrition often have their roots in habits learned while young, while global health problems ranging from asthma to HIV/AIDS continue to escalate. Adolescents need to learn about a wide range of risks from protecting themselves to how health risks manifest in different parts of the world.

In partnership with Mercy Corps, Health Matters is an interactive, pilot educational videoconference program for high school students. Through it, GNG will bring young people from the U.S. and the Middle East on a virtual journey that equips students with a cross-cultural perspective on matters vital to health and well being. Topic areas range from fitness to nutrition to public health and peer pressure. This program will complement what these students are already learning in their health, science and social studies classes. Students will discuss vital health issues together, along with GNG health correspondents, and learn about different health risks and attitudes in both the U.S. and the Middle East. As a result, young people will become inspired to actively involve themselves in sustainable, healthy lifestyles due a social action project.

In this hour, students from across the U.S. will begin to engage in an interactive dialogue about health well-being/wellness – building on what they have been discussing in the on-line forum. These young people will focus on the five key health and wellness dimensions: social, physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual. Furthermore, students will explore, with the assistance of noted health correspondent, Joanne Colan, what health and well-being means to them as individuals, as well as members of the larger global community.
Each program lasts one hour.
