Scientists in Action connects students with scientists while they are in their field site or research lab.
In 2011 scientists raced against time to uncover a unique Ice Age dig site packed with astonishingly well-preserved bones of mammoths, mastodons, and other giant extinct beasts, opening a vivid window into the vanished world of the Ice Age.
Patiently, clue by clue, the team unearths evidence to reconstruct a scenario about entire families of mastodons as they grazed beside an ancient lake. Featuring ingenious scientific work and spectacular fossils. Dr Kirk Johnson, lead scientist and Vice President of Research & Collections and Chief Curator, will discuss how scientists pursue scientific investigations and give students a virtual tour of where these massive bones and fossils are stored and studied.
Students are linked with scientists as they broadcast live from their field sites or Museum labs. Scientists share new discoveries, demonstrate field research techniques, and answer questions from students.
