Grades 1-7: Programs from the Old Jail Center


The Old Jail Center currently has four new programs available for registration at www.Connect2Texas.net.

Title: Pre-Columbian - Play in Clay
Date: Sept. 27, Oct. 4 or 25

Target Audience: Grades 2-7
Cost: $125 (includes materials)
Description: Students are introduced to pre-Columbian pottery, history and traditions through reading "The Pot that Juan Built" by Nancy Andrews-Goebel and seeing works from the museum's collection. Students will see first hand how ancient pottery was made and study the designs of the Casas Grandes people. Each student will get to create a work of their own with non-mess air-dry clay.

Title: Once Upon A Time in Texas
Date: Oct. 29
Time: 10:00-10:45 AM CST or 1:00-1:45 PM CST
Target Audience: Grades 1-7
Cost: $100 (includes materials)
Description: Students are introduced to the Texas frontier through reading selections from Sallie Reynolds Matthews’s book "Interwoven: A Pioneer Chronicle," a pioneer’s firsthand account of life on the Texas frontier. Students will see artifacts such as branding irons, spurs, bits, and the painting by Alice Reynolds, "Presenting the Flag at Fort Davis." Students will create a personal flag.

Title: Discovery China
Date: Oct. 11 or 18

Target Audience: Grades 1-5
Cost: $100 (includes materials)
Description: See Chinese art that dates as far back as the Han Dynasty (206 B.C .-220A.D.) including Terra Cotta tomb figures, early porcelains and jades, as well as newer works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will see traditional Chinese imagery including the Chinese Dragon. After a discussion on the symbolism of the dragon students will make a dragon rod-puppet.

Title: Day of the Dead
Date: Oct. 25, 26, 27, 28, or 29

Target Audience: Grades 4-12
Cost: $75 (includes materials)
Description: Learn about the traditional celebration of Dia de los Muertos and a story of Lady Cartina. Discuss works by the artists that gave much of the look to the celebration, Jose Guadalupe Posada. Each student will also create a foil drawing of one of Posada’s calaveras. All materials included but markers.
