| Program Description | Join us live from Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri and be part of the action as hundreds of teams and thousands of students from across the world compete in the 20th annual FIRST Robotics World Championships. During the videoconference your students will interact with both competing student engineers and professional engineers working in the field. Go live to the pits as students test and tweak their robots. Ask questions about designing and building the machines, what’s working and what’s not. Go live to the field of competition and see the robots in action. Ask questions about how the robots are accomplishing their tasks, which strategies and designs work best. FIRST Robotics is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. Students of different ages from around the world compete and demonstrate their engineering prowess in four programs: FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST Tech Challenge, FIRST LEGO League, and Junior FIRST LEGO League. FRC stages short games played by remote-controlled robots. The robots are designed and built in 6 weeks (out of a common set of basic parts) by a team of 25 or more high-school-aged young people and a handful of engineers-mentors. The students pilot the robots on the field as they participate in a series of challenges designed by Dean Kamen, Dr. Woodie Flowers, and a committee of engineers and other professionals. In this year’s LOGO MOTION challenge for FRC, two alliances of three teams compete on a 27-by-54-foot field with poles and earn points by using their robots to hang as many triangle, circle and square logo pieces as possible on a rack at the end of the field. They also deploy “minibots” that emerge from the main robot to climb a vertical pole and trigger a sensor on its top. The 2 minute and 15 second match begins with 15 seconds of “autonomous time” when the teams’ robots must operate independently of any student driver. But, as exciting as the competition is, “it’s not just about robots,” said FIRST founder Dean Kamen. “It’s about building self-confidence, respect and important relationships with people who invent new technologies to make a better future.” Referees oversee the competition. Judges present awards to teams for design, technology, sportsmanship and commitment to FIRST. FIRST redefines winning for these students. Teams are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last. Grades 7-12: 2011 Holocaust Videoconference
On Wednesday, May 4, 2011, from 1:00-2:15pm EST, the Eastchester UFSD and the Westchester Holocaust Education Center will host a multi-point videoconference on the Holocaust for secondary-level students.
The conference will feature the stories of Mr. Jay Sommer, who escaped from a Nazi labor camp and was forced to serve in the Soviet Army and Ms. Barbara Berger Tartell, who will share the stories of her father and mother who were both Holocaust survivors. Ms. Tartell will also share her insights and perspectives on how the second generation has been affected by the Holocaust. The conference will be moderated by Mr. Andrew Cahn, Regional Museum Educator for United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
The format for the conference will provide the speakers with an opportunity to share their story and offer perspectives on the Holocaust and its relationship to the “human spirit." This will be followed by a round-robin Q&A session with the conference participants.
There is no fee for participating in the conference, but an IP connection is required to connect to our bridge. A mandatory test call to the bridge must be completed on April 27 or 28, 2011 between 9:00am-3:00pm EST. Additional test call information will be sent once participation is confirmed.

2011 Genocide and Human Rights Project
The Eastchester UFSD and Global-Leap are proud to announce the 2011 Genocide and Human Rights Project.
The project involves a series of international multi-point videoconferences with recognized experts that focus on four historical events: the genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda and Sudan.
Each of the video conferences provides an opportunity for high school/secondary school students to interact with each other and a guest expert to learn about the events, share their knowledge and exchange ideas. The format of these moderated conferences includes an opening backgrounder by the guest expert, followed by a round-robin Q&A session with the expert.
In addition to these video conferences, students from the schools collaborate on Moodle site, participating in forums and chats about genocide/human rights. They will also develop wiki on the four genocides, in addition to an “action project” that impacts on genocide or human rights. The action projects are shared during the culminating video conference.
The conference dates/times are as follows:

Thus far, We have a school in the United Kingdom and one school in Italy as confirmed participants. We are seeking up to four more schools that are interested in participating in complete project:
- all the video conferences
- participation in forums, chats and wiki development on the Moodle site
- development of an action project to be presented during the culminating videoconference
Participating schools must have an IP video conferencing connection and should be available for a test call to our bridge during the week of April 11-15.

For thousands of years Plains Indians hunted bison for food. When the first transcontinental railroad was complete in 1869, the buffalo hunters soon followed, and the bison began vanishing from the prairies. Join us as we discuss the impact of the buffalo on the Plains Indians, what happened when the hide hunters came and about the people who rescued the bison from extinction. We will use artifacts, videos and historic photographs to tell the story. *PLEASE READ* We plan to show a historical reenactment of the processing of a buffalo.
