Did George Washington really wear a wig? Were his false teeth really made of wood? What sorts of animals did he keep at Mount Vernon? You and your students will learn the answers to these--and other--questions during this interactive conference with Laura Simo, Associate Curator, George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens. Students will have the opportunity to send questions prior to and during the program while learning more about our country's first President.

Gr. 1-3 Meet the Author Amanda Knoll "I Need a Monster"

Students will have the opportunity to have a live discussion with the California Young Reader Medal Award Nominee, Amanda Knoll, author of "I Need a Monster." During the 60-minute, live broadcast, students will have the opportunity to ask questions on the nominated book, as well as the craft of writing.

Gr 4-10 Inside the Artist’s Studio: Drummer Boys, “Battledrum,” the Civil War

How do you take the world of Civil War drummer boys and create a compelling and meaningful stage production that is also historically accurate? To find out the answer to this question and more we invite you to meet the directors, designers, and actors from Metro Theater Company and historians from the Missouri Historical Society who are taking on that challenge with the play, “Battledrum.” For both programs, join us live from the auditorium of the Missouri History Museum where the production will take place.

Both the January 5 and 12 programs will include a tour of the set, question and answers with the director and actors, performance of a short scene from the play, examples of drummer boy drills used both by soldiers as well as in the production, and video showing elements of the Missouri History Museum’s new exhibition, “The Civil War in Missouri.”

The January 12 program will also include the unique opportunity for students to interact with Doug Cooney, playwright of “Battledrum.” Thus, in addition to the opportunity to meet the actors, designers and historians involved with the production, students will be able to ask questions of the playwright himself about his writing process in general as well as about his creation of this particular play. For this January 12 program, part of the preparatory materials will include a segment from the play for students to read in advance to help them develop questions for Mr. Cooney.

How To View the Program:
People can join the program live in any of three ways:

1. Via videconference--We have interactive and view only videoconference slots available for student groups to join the program. Groups interested in connecting this way will need a videoconference unit at their facility, and we would need to test your connection with our bridge at MOREnet ahead of the program using the IP address you'd use to connect on the program day. Interactive slots get face to face question and answer time with the program guests; view only slots can e-mail questions and comments during the program to live@hectv.org. These slots are limited so early enrollment is highly recommended.

2. Via Internet--All our HEC-TV Live! programs are streamed live via the station website, http://www.hectv.org, on the program day. Just go to our home page at the program time and the program will run on that page. Since many schools limit streaming video through their firewalls, we recommend testing your ability to view the stream prior to the program by watching one of HEC-TV’s archived programs at http://www.hectv.org. We also recommend viewing the program live on one computer only and connecting that computer to a television, digital projector, or smart board for classroom viewing. Viewers can e-mail their questions and comments during the program to us at live@hectv.org. To receive curriculum materials designed to help you prepare your students for the program, just e-mail us prior to the program at live@hectv.org.

3. Via Television--All our programs are available in the St. Louis metropolitan area on HEC-TV, Charter Communications digital channels 989 or 118-26. All our programs can also be seen on AT&T’s U-Verse channel 99. Students viewing in this way can e-mail their questions during the program to live@hectv.org. To view the show live on the program day, just turn on your TV to the appropriate channel.

For Internet and TV viewing, there is no enrollment deadline date. We would appreciate knowing the time of the program you are watching and the grade level and amount of students involved so we can forward that information to our program partners. Such information is extremely helpful in securing funding for more free, interactive, educational programs in the future. Heart of a Hall of Famer Series: Warren Moon

Our character education series Heart of a Hall of Famer continues with a videoconference on Wednesday January 18 at 12:00 noon and 1:30 PM EST. Join Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon as he talks about the traits that made him one of the game's greatest. Moon was named to nine Pro Bowls and passed for nearly 50,000 yards during his NFL career. Moon is currently a color analyst for the Seattle Seahawks and has a sports marketing company in Irvine, California.

This is an interactive program and is limited to six interactive schools at each time slot and unlimited view only schools. It is designed for grades 6th-12th and is FREE of charge. These spots will fill quickly so act fast.

FREE - The U.S. and Mexico “Drugs, Violence & Co-Responsibility”

Guest Speaker: Joy Olson Executive Director of Washington Office on Latin America

Joy Olson is a leading expert on human rights and U.S. policy toward Latin America. Since 2003, she has led the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), a nonprofit organization that promotes human rights, democracy, and social justice by working with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to shape policies in the United States and abroad.

Under Ms. Olson’s direction, WOLA is pioneering new approaches to human rights advocacy, focusing on the underlying causes of injustice, inequality, and violence.

Ms. Olson’s special expertise is in the area of military and security policy. She has been a longtime advocate for greater transparency of military programs in Latin America. She co-founded the Just the Facts project, which makes information about U.S. military policy in Latin America publicly accessible.

Ms. Olson has testified before Congress on Latin America policy issues ranging from human rights in Mexico to drug policy to the problems of poverty and inequality in the region. She is a frequent commentator in the media, including CNN, CNN Español, the BBC, the Lehrer News Hour, National Public Radio, and an array of national and international news outlets.

Prior to joining WOLA, Ms. Olson directed the Latin America Working Group (LAWG), a coalition of sixty non-governmental organizations working to promote peaceful and just U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America. Her many accomplishments include leading NGO efforts to increase U.S. funding for Central American peace accords implementation and a successful advocacy effort to lift the ban on food and medicine sales to Cuba.

LIVE from Haiti: 2nd Anniversary of the Earthquake

This videoconference session is being held to mark the second anniversary of the earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12, 2010. It is an occasion to take a look at Canada's contribution in this country over the past two years. Schools across Canada are invited to take part in this videoconference under the theme “There for Haiti”. During this session, students will connect to young people in Haiti, hear their stories and view images of humanitarian assistance, reconstruction and development projects. They will also have the opportunity to talk with Government of Canada representatives, including the Director of Cooperation live from Port-au-Prince, who will share their personal experience and talk about CIDA’s efforts to assist the most vulnerable and to rebuild Haiti. (This session will have elements in both French and English)

To be an interactive school, you will need to contribute artistically though, through song, dance OR art.

"Gulliver’s Troubles: How America Will Fare in a Changing Middle East"

Aaron David Miller is an American Middle East analyst, author, and negotiator. He is on the
U.S. Advisory Council of Israel Policy Forum, is Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson
Center, and has been an advisor to six Secretaries of State. Miller worked within the United States
Department of State for twenty four years (1978–2003). Between 1988 and 2003, Miller served six
secretaries of state as an advisor on Arab-Israeli negotiations, where he participated in American
efforts to broker agreements between Israel, Jordan, Syria, and the Palestinians. He left the
Department of State in January 2003 to serve as president of Seeds of Peace, an international
youth organization, founded in 1993. In January 2006, he became a public policy scholar at the
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. Miller published his fourth
book, The Much Too Promised Land: America’s Elusive Search for Arab-Israeli Peace, in 2008.

Berrien RESA works with Lest We Forget Southwest Michigan to coordinate a series of interviews with local veterans. Each session features a panel of local veterans with a variety of experiences in each war. In this session, students will hear experiences from and interview veterans from World War II.

Scientists in Action connects students with scientists while they are in their field site or research lab. 
Join Nicole Garneau, PhD, curator of human health, for an inside look at your health, the mystery of genetic traits, and the science behind DNA. Live from the Rocky Mountain Taste & Smell Center Lab.
Students are linked with scientists as they broadcast live from their field sites or Museum labs. Scientists share new discoveries, demonstrate field research techniques, and answer questions from students.


Program Format:
45 minute session
Scientist gives an introduction of themselves and their unique location (10 minutes).
Scientist welcomes questions and discussion from students.
Scientist uses their unique location (field, lab, collections) to help make information relevant to students (35 minutes).
