Grades 7-12: Virtual College Tour

The Northern Ohio Research & Training Technology Hub (NORT2H) is once again organizing the Virtual College Tour. This program allows students to meet admission staff from several of Ohio's top universities without having to leave their school building. SEARCHING FOR LIFE IN THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS

Welcome to the Great Smoky Mountains – home to more than 17,000 species of plants and animals! Please join us on an educational adventure to the most visited national park in the country – Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Here, the variety of elevations, the abundant rainfall, and the presence of old growth forests give the park an unusual richness of biota (collection of organisms). Black bears, tiger swallowtails, tulip poplars, elk, and lung-less salamanders are just a few of the species that thrive in this region. It is amazing to think there are living things all around us that have gone undetected, yet new species are continually being discovered in this mountain wonderland. This program is targeted at grades 5 to 8.l

Through the learning modules that will go live online on Friday, October 9, and the show that will air from 10:00am – 11:00am EST, and from 1:00pm to 2:00pm EST, on Tuesday, November 3, you will explore:

• Understanding Biodiversity (biomes)
• Connected Web (food chain)
• Why so Diverse in Great Smoky Mountains? (geological connections)
• A Study in Salamanders
• Biodiversity Threats (invasive species)
• Protecting Biodiversity (species reintroduction)
• Backyard Stewardship

Please contact John Ramicone at 216-916-6360 or john.ramicone@ideastream.org by October 28th if you would like to receive this program through distance learning.

Grade 1-12: Adopt a Sled Dog: Track your health and Sled dog health!

The goal of this special event is to allow students a closer connection to the dogs in our kennel by having classrooms adopt a dog in the kennel. Students will examine their sled dog's base conditioning level, as well as their own, during the videoconference. Afterwards students can compare and analyze data throughout the year on the health of their adopted sled dog, through a variety of content area activities, provided free to the participating classroom. Students will be encouraged through additional web activities to increase their "healthiness" as the sled dogs do. Who will be the healthiest, sled dog or students?

This is the perfect videoconference to add the real life application to any health unit.
