Gr 4-7 "AFRICAN FOLK TALES" (Black History Month series)

Many cultures in Africa have traditions of oral story telling. Skilled storytellers would memorize folktales and captivate audiences with their stories of adventure. Many African folktales have morals, or lessons, for the young audiences.

Stories from Africa were traditionally passed down by word of mouth. Often they were told by the light of the moon around a village fire after the completion of a long day of work. The stories rarely ended with the words we so often heard as children when our parents told us bedtime stories -- "and they all lived happily ever after". Most stories didn't end happily ever after. Usually the stories taught a lesson, and frequently, the selfish person learned that lesson the hard way.

This videoconference is from Estelle Condra’s collection of South African folklore. Estelle Condra’s homeland is South Africa, and she has studied the folklore of the Sosotho, Zulu and Xhosa including some of the San people (spelling of the San people differ from region to region.) The African folk tales were told again and again before the time of reading and writing. These stories are very old and have been passed down orally from generation to generation by the “Memory Keepers”. These stories include many great tales with classic African wisdom.

Estelle will tell the students about the “Memory Keepers” and how they “made a story” based on the happenings in tribal society. There was a special way that the people asked the “Memory Keepers” to “make a story” around the fire and only at night.

After much deliberation, Estelle has chosen to tell two stories. The grade level for this lesson and videoconference is 4th – 12 grades because of the need to examine and appreciate the stories.

Estelle will tell these stories in English and with a drum. She will use shades of nuance and cadence to reflect the language patterns of these nations. She will strive to keep the stories as authentic and pure Southern African as possible, keeping stories that are too Westernized and too cute out of her repertoire.

The first story that Estelle will tell is the story of ”N‘tombiembi and her sisters” which could be seen as an African Cinderella story. This is a Sosotho story.

The second story that Estelle will tell is called “The ”Sunman” about how the sun came in the sky. This is a N’tabeli story translated from a rock painting. This story describes how things happen in nature that the people did not understand. This story involves traditional tribal magic and a medicine woman. Listen carefully for the rhythmic language. Many other nations have similar stories but these are authentically Southern African and include traditions and lifestyles of the ancient peoples.

In both of these stories, students will look for the symbolism, the metaphors, and the specific and typical African traditions for men and women during this time period. They will listen carefully to the rhythmic language as Estelle uses shades of nuance and cadence to reflect the language patterns of these nations.

FREE “Recognizing Teen Depression and Preventing Suicide”

One in five high school students seriously consider suicide— the second cause of death for
Ohio teens. Eight percent of teens actually attempt suicide during their high school years.

Suicide Prevention Education Alliance (SPEA) teaches teens to be the “first line of defense” in
preventing suicide with its proven program, Recognizing Teen Depression and Preventing Suicide,
which is now delivered in 112 high schools to 15,000 teens per year. Many teens like TW come
forward to our professional instructors to report symptoms of depressive illness or thoughts of
suicide. As a result of our program delivery in TW’s school, he is receiving the help that he so
desperately needs.

Teens tell a friend when they have a plan for suicide…they seldom tell a teacher, guidance counselor
or school nurse. Too often, teens keep a code of silence about a friend’s depressive illness or suicide
plan. Through this special program, SPEA will teach young people to: Understand that the main
cause of suicide is untreated mental illness, most often depression; Understand that depression is a
treatable brain illness; Realize there is no reason for shame or stigma; Recognize the symptoms of
depression in themselves and others; Utilize resources to get help from a mental health professional;
Never maintain a secret about a person’s symptoms of depression or thoughts of suicide; Employ
their knowledge to help save lives, now and throughout their lifetime.

This session will be interactive, allowing viewers and attendees to participate via question and email.

Join Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Dave Wilcox as he talks about the traits that made him one of the game's greatest. Wilcox, a seven-time Pro Bowler, is regarded as one of the finest linebackers of his era. While now retired, Wilcox also spent nearly 30 years as part owner of two health clubs and a therapy business.

(FREE VC) Cleveland Browns teams with Pro Football Hall of Fame

On Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 the Cleveland Browns will be hosting a panel discussion in recognition of Black History Month. The discussion, “Personal Reflections: The Positive Effects of Football on Racial Equality,” will be moderated by Pro Football Hall of Fame President/Executive Director, Steve Perry. The panel will include Cleveland Browns alumni: Walter Beach, John Wooten, Dick Schafrath, Reggie Rucker and Sam Tidmore. The event will include individual introductions and reflections along with a question and answer portion and is scheduled to run one hour.

The Browns are teaming up with the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Educational Outreach Program to bring this program to students nationwide via video conference. The video conference session, for grades 6th-12th, is being offered as “limited interactive” and free of charge. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is proud to once again present our annual Black History Month seminar on Wednesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 23. Two sessions on each day will run from 9:15 AM to 10:30 AM and 11:15 AM to 12:30 PM.

This year's seminar will feature Hall of Fame teammates Len Dawson and Bobby Bell. Dawson, a quarterback and Super Bowl MVP, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. Bell, a standout linebacker/defensive end, was inducted in 1983. Both men played with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 1960s when they won Super Bowl IV. The Chiefs received notoriety as the first pro football team to fill more than half of its roster with African American players. Don't miss out on this unique educational seminar as Dawson and Bell share their unique stories about this historic moment in professional football history as well as other life events on and off the football field.

Guest Speaker: Abraham Denmark

Senior Project Director for Political and Security Affairs at The National Bureau of Asian Research

Mr. Denmark manages several NBR research programs on political and security issues in Asia and works directly with NBR’s network of experts to bring objective, detailed analysis of geopolitical trends and challenges in Asia to the attention of policymakers in Washington, D.C. He regularly travels throughout the Asia-Pacific region for research and to develop NBR’s network.

Mr. Denmark has significant experience both inside and outside government. He previously worked as a Fellow at the Center for a New American Security and served in the Pentagon as Country Director for China Affairs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Mr. Denmark is widely published, having authored several book chapters and reports on U.S. strategy toward the Asia-Pacific region and the global commons. He has been featured in major media outlets in the United States and Asia, including NPR, the Financial Times, Foreign Policy, the Global Times, World Affairs, the Washington Quarterly, the U.S. Naval War College Review, Newsweek, Time, and the New York Times. Mr. Denmark regularly lectures at leading universities and learning centers around the world, including Peking University and the U.S. Naval War College.

Mr. Denmark also serves as an Asia-Pacific Security Advisor at the Center for Naval Analyses and is a Sasakawa Peace Foundation Nonresident Fellow at CSIS-Pacific Forum. He is a member of the National Committee on United States–China Relations, the U.S. Naval Institute, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He has received several awards and was named a 21st Century Leader by the National Committee on American Foreign Policy. Mr. Denmark holds an MA in International Security from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver, and received a BA in History with Honors from the University of Northern Colorado. He has also studied at China’s Foreign Affairs University and Peking University.

Poet/playwright Ntozake Shangé’s choreopoem “why i had to dance” propels the audience into the world of dance through the poet’s experiences. Shangé describes it as: “The story of black dance herself… the connectedness of black dance from one generation to another generation and from one region to another region, moving all around the dance world from my childhood on.”

A panel of scholars and dance artists including Dianne McIntyre, choreographer of this new Shangé choreopoem, will share stories and contextualize some of the remarkable dance traditions mentioned in the poem. Throughout the broadcast, the company of dancers working with Ms. McIntyre will demonstrate various styles of movement.

Learn about the cowboy lifestyle during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as depicted through photographs, paintings, and sculpture from the collection of western art in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Then, experience the history and lifestyle of the American cowboy as told by an historical interpreter from the galleries of the Institute of Texan Cultures. Programs are all interactive, with only four sites participating in each time slot. Time slots with the notation Times Two! in the title will interact with educators at both cultural institutions, while all other time slots will originate from the Amon Carter and include video from the ITC. These programs and the children's books Cowboy with a Camera and Cowboy Charlie, as well as the postcards, pencils, and posters that each participating classroom will receive are made possible by a generou s grant from the Erwin E. Smith Foundation.

On January 19, 2011 Dr. Ellen Prager will be at the Aquarium of the Pacific for an evening lecture. She has graciously offered to spend time with a high school class via videoconferencing that morning. Dr. Prager will be discussing her work with the students and answering any questions they may have. Sex, Drugs and Sea Slime highlights the strange cast of characters that inhabit the oceans’ depths and how they are connected to our food supply, the economy, jobs and in biomedical research and biotechnology. These sea creatures include the tiny voracious arrow worms, whose predatory ways may lead to death by overeating, the hagfish that ties itself into a knot to keep from suffocating in its own slime, and the sea slug, whose sexual encounters can truly turn into a dangerous liaison due to untimely cannibalism.

Prager is formerly the chief scientist for the Aquarius Reef Base program in Key Largo, Florida. She also served as a faculty scientist at Sea Education Association (SEA) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts; the resident director of the National Undersea Research Center in the Bahamas; a researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey; chairman of the Ocean Research and Resources Advisory Panel for the federal government; and assistant dean at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. She remains an adjunct faculty member at the school.

This program will take place from 10 am to 11 am PST (1:0pm - 2:00pm Eastern Time) on January 19, 2011. Participants MUST be available at this time.

Free History in the First Person: Lessons from the Holocaust

What was it like to be a Jew in Europe prior to World War II? How was your life different from non-Jews? What did you know about the regime in Nazi Germany and what happened to you as a result of its rule? What was it like to be sent away from your parents on the Kindertrasnport or to stay in your home country and be taken away to a concentration camp? What was life like in the camps? What did it mean to be liberated? For this very special program, take your study of World War II and the Holocaust to individuals who lived through them. Ask these questions and more as you interact with Holocaust survivors.

Our focus in this program will not be exploring the historic details of World War II or the Holocaust, but it will be to provide students the rare and important opportunity to speak directly with those who lived during that time and survived to share their experiences with others. This program will come live from the Holocaust Museum and Learning Center in St. Louis. The program will also include information about resources available through the Center.

Free “Brazilian Youth Ambassadors”

Brazilian Youth Ambassadors are visiting cities all around the United States. Eight students will
be in Cleveland on January 17th to interact with your students, from the Idea Center, via a distance
learning connection. Their program is aimed to enhance their understanding of Social Justice and
Volunteerism. The Brazilian students were selected by the Embassy based on personality, academic
performance, leadership skills, community involvement and volunteer experience. None of them
have traveled outside of Brazil prior to this trip. Volunteer experiences include environmental and
social projects; community service; teaching English, citizenship, computers and dance; church
related projects; and video documentaries.

Join us on the 17th and provide your students an excellent opportunity to meet and talk with
these students about the schools, life experiences and the projects they are involved with in
their respective high schools and cities in Brazil. The Brazilians will begin the discussion with
a presentation they have put together about Brazil and your students will be encouraged to ask
questions.

Free 2012 BioMedTech: STEM, Distance Learning Program

Great Lakes Science Center, in partnership with the Cleveland Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative and in collaboration with WVIZ ideastream, presents the BioMedTech: Students Translating and Exploring Medicine 2012 Distance Learning Series.

This four-part series engages students (Grades 7-12) in exploring how diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease (DOC) discoveries go from the bench (the laboratory) to the bedside (patient care at the doctor’s office or hospital). Local medical researchers and experts from top medical institutions (Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center, and University Hospitals at Case Medical Center) will introduce students to the full spectrum of research by showcasing their DOC studies. Learn how medical experts use laboratory, clinical, population, and community research to advance prevention strategies and treatments for DOC patients.

This program is funded through a Science Education Partnership Award through the National Center for Research Resources, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

Gr 4-10 Inside the Artist’s Studio: Drummer Boys, “Battledrum,” the Civil War

How do you take the world of Civil War drummer boys and create a compelling and meaningful stage production that is also historically accurate? To find out the answer to this question and more we invite you to meet the directors, designers, and actors from Metro Theater Company and historians from the Missouri Historical Society who are taking on that challenge with the play, “Battledrum.” For both programs, join us live from the auditorium of the Missouri History Museum where the production will take place.

Both the January 5 and 12 programs will include a tour of the set, question and answers with the director and actors, performance of a short scene from the play, examples of drummer boy drills used both by soldiers as well as in the production, and video showing elements of the Missouri History Museum’s new exhibition, “The Civil War in Missouri.”

The January 12 program will also include the unique opportunity for students to interact with Doug Cooney, playwright of “Battledrum.” Thus, in addition to the opportunity to meet the actors, designers and historians involved with the production, students will be able to ask questions of the playwright himself about his writing process in general as well as about his creation of this particular play. For this January 12 program, part of the preparatory materials will include a segment from the play for students to read in advance to help them develop questions for Mr. Cooney.

Our character education series Heart of a Hall of Famer continues with avideoconference on Wednesday January 18 at 12:00 noon and 1:30 PM EST. Join ProFootball Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon as he talks about the traits thatmade him one of the game's greatest. Moon was named to nine Pro Bowls andpassed for nearly 50,000 yards during his NFL career. Moon is currently a coloranalyst for the Seattle Seahawks and has a sports marketing company in Irvine,California.

This is an interactive program and is limited to six interactive schools ateach time slot and unlimited view only schools. It is designed for grades6th-12th and is FREE of charge. These spots will fill quickly so act fast.

Guest Speaker: Joy Olson Executive Director of Washington Office on Latin America

Joy Olson is a leading expert on human rights and U.S. policy toward Latin America. Since 2003, she has led the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), a nonprofit organization that promotes human rights, democracy, and social justice by working with partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to shape policies in the United States and abroad.

Under Ms. Olson’s direction, WOLA is pioneering new approaches to human rights advocacy, focusing on the underlying causes of injustice, inequality, and violence.

Ms. Olson’s special expertise is in the area of military and security policy. She has been a longtime advocate for greater transparency of military programs in Latin America. She co-founded the Just the Facts project, which makes information about U.S. military policy in Latin America publicly accessible.

Ms. Olson has testified before Congress on Latin America policy issues ranging from human rights in Mexico to drug policy to the problems of poverty and inequality in the region. She is a frequent commentator in the media, including CNN, CNN Español, the BBC, the Lehrer News Hour, National Public Radio, and an array of national and international news outlets.

Prior to joining WOLA, Ms. Olson directed the Latin America Working Group (LAWG), a coalition of sixty non-governmental organizations working to promote peaceful and just U.S. foreign policy toward Latin America. Her many accomplishments include leading NGO efforts to increase U.S. funding for Central American peace accords implementation and a successful advocacy effort to lift the ban on food and medicine sales to Cuba.

Join Hall of Fame running back Floyd Little as he talks about the traits that made him one of the game's greatest. Little amassed over 12,000 all-purpose yards and 54 touchdowns during his career. He embarked on a successful career in the auto sales industry following his playing career.

LIVE from Haiti: 2nd Anniversary of the Earthquake

This videoconference session is being held to mark the second anniversary of the earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12, 2010. It is an occasion to take a look at Canada's contribution in this country over the past two years. Schools across Canada are invited to take part in this videoconference under the theme “There for Haiti”. During this session, students will connect to young people in Haiti, hear their stories and view images of humanitarian assistance, reconstruction and development projects. They will also have the opportunity to talk with Government of Canada representatives, including the Director of Cooperation live from Port-au-Prince, who will share their personal experience and talk about CIDA’s efforts to assist the most vulnerable and to rebuild Haiti. (This session will have elements in both French and English)

To be an interactive school, you will need to contribute artistically though, through song, dance OR art.

"Gulliver’s Troubles: How America Will Fare in a Changing Middle East"

Aaron David Miller is an American Middle East analyst, author, and negotiator. He is on the
U.S. Advisory Council of Israel Policy Forum, is Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson
Center, and has been an advisor to six Secretaries of State. Miller worked within the United States
Department of State for twenty four years (1978–2003). Between 1988 and 2003, Miller served six
secretaries of state as an advisor on Arab-Israeli negotiations, where he participated in American
efforts to broker agreements between Israel, Jordan, Syria, and the Palestinians. He left the
Department of State in January 2003 to serve as president of Seeds of Peace, an international
youth organization, founded in 1993. In January 2006, he became a public policy scholar at the
Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. Miller published his fourth
book, The Much Too Promised Land: America’s Elusive Search for Arab-Israeli Peace, in 2008.

Scientists in Action connects students with scientists while they are in their field site or research lab.
Join Nicole Garneau, PhD, curator of human health, for an inside look at your health, the mystery of genetic traits, and the science behind DNA. Live from the Rocky Mountain Taste & Smell Center Lab.
Students are linked with scientists as they broadcast live from their field sites or Museum labs. Scientists share new discoveries, demonstrate field research techniques, and answer questions from students.

Program Format:
45 minute session
Scientist gives an introduction of themselves and their unique location (10 minutes).
Scientist welcomes questions and discussion from students.
Scientist uses their unique location (field, lab, collections) to help make information relevant to students (35 minutes).

Capitol Hill, in the Oval Office, and in other centers of power and prestige around the world, they
take a humorous look at serious issues while providing a nationwide laugh for millions.

Topic: Capitol Steps "The Lighter Side of Politics"

The Capitol Steps were created in December 1981, when three staffers for Senator Charles Percy
were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. They decided to dig into the headlines of the
day, and created song parodies and skits. Ronald Reagan was President when the Steps began, so
co-founders Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss, and Jim Aidala figured that if entertainers could become
politicians, then politicians could become entertainers!

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Desperate
Housemembers. They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times
a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio
specials.

Chat with Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Elvin Bethea as he is featured in the next installment of the Heart of a Hall of Famer series on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM ET. Learn about the character qualities it took for the Class of 2003 enshrinee to make it into his sport’s most exclusive club – the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Students will have the opportunity to learn first-hand what it took beyond athletics for this gridiron legend to achieve greatness and how his character qualities helped him achieve great success on and off the football field.

The program will last approximately one hour with a majority of that time being driven by questions from the student participants. This program is designed for grades 6th-12th. Each videoconference is limited to six sites and is FREE. Interested schools will be selected on a first-come basis. Test connections will take place on Wednesday December 7.
